Prunus 'First Lady' Tree

Prunus 'First Lady' Tree

Prunus 'First Lady' is a beautiful flowering cherry tree, with an upright, almost columnar habit. A cross between Prunus 'Okame' and Prunus campanulata, this hybrid was developed in 1982 by the United States Department of Agriculture but is very hardy and more than capable of thriving in a UK garden. The deep pink single flowers, which emerge in early spring, have the bell shape and semi-pendulous form of Prunus 'Okame', but with a much more vibrant colour akin to Prunus campanulata. Deep green summer foliage makes way for oranges and yellows in autumn.

Like all cherry blossom trees, Prunus ‘First Lady’ requires a moist, well-drained soil. It will tolerate partial shade but it grows and flowers best in a full sun position. A great option for wildlife, Prunus 'First Lady' requires minimal to no pruning to maintain its upright form, and is an excellent choice for gardens with limited space that are in need of some height. Prunus 'First Lady' will reach an approximate height and spread of 8 x 3 metres in 20 years.
